6th Grade

Communicating for Success in the Real World                          Semester

After completing this course, students will have a set of portable communication skills that they can use in a variety of academic and real-world experiences. Students will learn speaking techniques and gain valuable practice in a safe setting to reduce the fears associated with public speaking. Students will also learn about different kinds of speeches, with emphasis on verbal and nonverbal delivery skills (organization, projection, inflection, eye-contact, hand gestures, and more). Students will also build a foundation for effective argumentation and advocacy (claim/warrant/evidence), which they may apply in class debates and Socratic Seminar. As students examine numerous examples of speeches, they will apply critical listening skills and an attitude of appreciative inquiry for diverse perspectives.

Concert Band                                           Full Year

This class is for students who have 1-2 years experience playing their instrument and have intermediate instrumental skills mastered. This class consists of mostly 7th grade students but intermediate level 6th/8th grade students may be a part of this class as well. Concert Band members will perform 2-3 concerts during the school year including a possible festival concert outside of school. All Jefferson County Music Content Standards are part of everyday class and students will be expected to improve on these throughout the full year course.

Destination Imagination                            Semester of Full Year

Creative Problem Solving/Destination ImagiNation will prepare you to be an innovator of the future by combining the arts, sciences, and technology with creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. You will use your leadership, collaboration, and project management skills to create STEAM-based projects designed to prepare you for adulting in the 21st century. Your main project will be presented at least once at a Destination ImagiNation (DI) tournament. It is not required to take this elective to participate in DI, but it is encouraged.

Intermediate Band                                    Full Year

This class is for students who have 1-2 years experience playing their instrument and have basic instrumental skills mastered. This class consists of mostly 6th grade students but beginning level 7th/8th grade students may be a part of this class as well. Concert Band members will perform 2-3 concerts during the school year including a possible festival concert outside of school. Intro to Computers                                  Semester

This course provides an opportunity for students to utilize and expand their computer science knowledge, while also creating the opportunity for beginners to succeed at learning the basics. Students create numerous multimedia projects in the class. Students have opportunities to learn graphic design and video editing basics. While creating the various projects, students learn to utilize skills using Photoshop, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel. They also will learn to make websites, where their projects will be hosted.

Media Literacy                                          Semester

Media literacy is the ability to question, understand, interpret, analyze, and evaluate the content, intent, strategies, and effects of the mass media.  Being media literate means that you control the interpretation of the media instead of it controlling you. To “crack the code” of media, students will become aware of principles, myths, and techniques used by creators of electronic and print content, through a close study of social media, news media articles, commercials, movies, and TV shows.

Orchestra                                                 Full Year

This orchestra is a performance-oriented ensemble that is open to students who have had one or more years' experience in playing a stringed instrument. The group will perform 3-4 concerts throughout the year and will play both classical and popular music.

Physical Education                                   Semester or full year

Students wear pedometers daily to track their MVPA (Moderate-Vigorous Physical Activity). At the end of class, students dock their pedometers into the computer to determine how much they moved during class.Students participate in a variety of physical activities and fitness testing to improve their fitness levels.

Serious Reading for Serious Readers       Semester

This course is designed to challenge students to grow as independent readers. Students will work with the teacher and classmates to develop a list of high interest books to read. Units of study may include genres like graphic novels, multicultural literature, science fiction & fantasy, historical fiction, and whatever else students elect to explore. This course will also focus on strategies to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary, so that students understand and enjoy reading at a higher degree than when they entered the class.

Spanish 101                                              Full Year

Students will engage in active learning through speaking, reading and writing the Spanish language. They will also listen to native speakers to improve comprehension. Students will explore the culture with videos, songs, games, artwork and cultural days.

Sports Math: All Sports, All the Time        Semester

Are you ready for some football?  How about some competition among classmates and your teacher?  In this class, students will analyze NFL statistics, matchups, injuries, and bye weeks to prepare and draft a fantasy football team based on a specified salary cap.  Throughout the NFL season, students will calculate points based on number of passing, rushing, and receiving yards, touchdowns, as well as individual and team defensive sacks, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns.  The winner will be determined after regular season week sixteen.  GAME ON!!! Winter and Spring brings us to basketball, the National Hockey League, and the beginning of baseball season!  Students will study and research different men’s and women’s NCAA basketball programs to select a “final four” before March Madness.  We will also be keeping track of the NHL battle for the Stanley Cup by studying teams in both the Western and Eastern conferences.  Finally, students will use team and individual statistics from Major League Baseball’s Spring Training and the beginning of the regular season to present playoff hopefuls for the 2018 season.  BATTER UP!!

Theater Arts                                            Semester

Theater Arts is a performance based class focusing on the basics of acting. The class is designed to help students express themselves and gain confidence while working on skills such as improvisation, characterization, and how to effectively audition and perform. Whether you have experience in theater or not, theater is a fun way to work on performing, public speaking, and memorization techniques.

Visual Arts                                               Semester

Art classes for the 7th grade provide students with two and three dimensional art experiences. A wide variety of media will be used to discover avenues for personal expression ranging in scope from drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, and beading to sculpture. Learn to create art that will make you feel proud and surprise those around you
